Summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, Jan. 15

MANILA — Philippine stocks closed 0.11 percent lower on Friday. The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 3.44 points to 3,118.47, while the all-share index went down by 0.56 point or 0.028 percent to 1,950.97.  The trade volume reached 1.10 billion shares worth 3.98 billion pesos (87.09 million U.S. dollars).

SEOUL — South Korean stocks finished higher Friday on gains of technology companies and shipbuilders. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index surged 16.03 points, or 0.95 percent, to 1,701.80.

Volume was moderate at 410 million shares worth 6.38 trillion won (5.68 billion U.S. dollars).

WELLINGTON — New Zealand sharemarket on Friday closed 0.62 percent lower with the benchmark NZSX-50 down 20.38 points at 3257. 95.

The turnover was 70.3 million NZ dollars(51.9 million U.S. dollars), mostly due to profit-taking in leading shares.

CANBERRA — Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s (CBA) surprise profit upgrade drove an abrupt turnaround as the Australian share market closed on Friday pushing the market to close up 1.6 points.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 23.9 points at that time but CBA’S news drove it to close 1.6 points higher at 4,899.6.

Turnover reached 2.8 billion shares, worth 4.8 billion dollars (4.45 billion U.S. dollars), with 531 stocks trading up, 540 down and 359 steady..

TOKYO — Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday with the key Nikkei index up 0.68 percent to hit a fresh 15-month closing high. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average gained 74.42 points to 10,982.10. The broader Topix index was up 7.39 points, or 0.77 percent, to 966.40.

Trading volume on the main section contracted to 3,102.27 million shares from 3,226.79 million Thursday.

HANOI — Vietnam’s stock market index, VN-Index, closed at 505. 42 points on Friday, down 6.91 points or 1.35 percent from the previous trading day.

A total of 37.13 million shares worth 1.6 trillion Vietnamese dong (86.41 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange. Prices of 29 stocks went up, 146 dropped while 28 remained unchanged.

SHANGHAI — China’s benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 3,224.15 points Friday, up 0.27 percent, or 8.6 points, from the previous close.

Total turnover was 151.4 billion yuan (22.2 billion U.S. dollars).

SHENZHEN — The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 13,264.37 points Friday, up 60.18 points, or 0. 46 percent, from the previous close.

Total turnover was 107.51 billion yuan (15.7 billion U.S. dollars).

HONG KONG — Hong Kong stocks shed 62.79 points, or 0.29 percent, to close at 21,654.16 on Friday.

Turnover totaled 84.28 billion HK dollars (10.81 billion U.S. dollars), compared with Thursday’s 84.20 billion HK dollars (10.80 billion U.S. dollars).

TAIPEI — Share prices on the Taiwan stock market closed higher Friday, with the weighted index up 66.91 points, or 0.81 percent, at 8,356.89.

The key barometer opened higher at 8,340.60 and moved between 8, 325.82 and 8,380.23 during the day’s trading, with 5.67 billion shares changing hands on a total turnover of 170.91 billion new Taiwan dollars (5.39 billion U.S. dollars).

COLOMBO — Share prices on the Colombo Stock Exchange closed up on Friday, with the key Colombo All Share Price Index increasing by 26.43 points, or 0.75 percent to close at 3,563.14 points.

A total turnover of 1.56 billion rupees (about 13.59 million U. S. dollars) was recorded during the day with a volume of 39.81 million shares being traded.

JAKARTA — Share prices on the Indonesia Stock Exchange closed higher on Friday as investors were encouraged by the positive influence of the world markets.   The composite index increased 1.909 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 2,644 with 6.7 billion shares worth 3.3 trillion rupiah ( some 360 million U.S. dollars) changing hands.

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysia stock market ended higher here on Friday. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,298.58, up 3.87 points or 0.30 percent, and the Emas was at 8,771.56, up 9. 65 points or 0.11 percent.

Turnover decreased to 1.68 billion shares valued at 1.92 billion ringgit (574.85 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.76 billion shares valued at 2.06 billion ringgit (617.78 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday.

BANGKOK — The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) composite index moved down 2.90 points, or 0.39 percent to close at 746.52 points on Friday.

Some 2.91 billion shares worth 19.10 billion baht (about 578.78 million U.S. dollars) changed hands.

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index (STI)  fell 1.1 points or 0.04 percent on Friday to close at 2,908.42 points.

The overall volume stood at 1.68 billion shares worth 1.42 billion Singapore dollars (about 1.02 billion U.S. dollars).
