Summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, Jan. 12

SEOUL — South Korean stocks closed higher Tuesday on gains by tech blue chips and energy utilities.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) jumped 4.52 points, or 0.27 percent, to 1,698.64.

Volume was moderate at 378 million shares worth 5.15 trillion won (4.58 billion U.S dollars).

TAIPEI — Share prices on the Taiwan stock market closed slightly lower on Tuesday, with the weighted index losing 14.45 points, or 0.17 percent, at 8,309.37.

The key barometer opened up 19.91 points at 8,343.73 and moved between 8,262.58 and 8,356.97 during the day’s trading, with 5.27 billion shares changing hands on a total turnover of 147.82 billion new Taiwan dollars (4.65 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI — Vietnam’s stock market index, VN-Index, closed at 498. 31 points on Tuesday, down 16.75 points, or 3.25 percent, against the previous trading day.

A total of 52.74 million shares worth 2.33 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (125.97 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange. Prices of 16 stocks went up, 179 dropped while eight remained unchanged.

TOKYO — Tokyo stocks rose Tuesday, with the Nikkei index closing above 10,800 for the first time since October 2008.

The benchmark Nikkei-225 index closed up 80.82 points, or 0.75 percent, from Friday to 10,879.14.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 12.84 points, or 1.36 percent, to a four- month high of 954.13.

Trading volume on the main section came to 2,523.81 million shares, down from Friday’s 2,630.17 million.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong stocks lost 84.88 points, or 0.38 percent, to close at 22,326.64 on Tuesday.

Turnover rose to 81.22 billion HK dollars (10.41 billion U.S. dollars) from Monday’s 74.18 billion HK dollars (9.51 billion U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysia stock market ended mixed here on Tuesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,292.85 down 1. 66 points or 0.13 percent, and the Emas was at 8,723.14 up 8.18 points or 0.09 percent.

There were 483 gainers, 275 losers and 248 counters traded unchanged.

Turnover increased to 1.68 billion shares valued at 1.78 billion ringgit Malaysia (532.14 million U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE — The shares prices in Singapore fell 17.42 points or 0.59 percent on Tuesday with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) closing at 2,916.11 points.

The overall volume stood at 2.86 billion shares worth 2.05 billion Singapore dollars (about 1.49 billion U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK — The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) composite index moved down 1.71 points, or 0.23 percent to close at 745.24 points on Tuesday.

Some 3.45 billion shares worth 21.47 billion baht (about 650.60 million U.S. dollars) changed hands.

The SET composite index moved up 7.99 points, or 1.08 percent to close at 746.95 points on Monday.

CANBERRA — The Australian share market was dragged one percent lower as profit-takers swooped after a two-day rally.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index dropped 51.2 points, or 1.03 percent, at 4,899.5 points on Tuesday, while the broader All Ordinaries index fell 49.6 points, or one percent, to 4,931.6 points.

COLOMBO — Share prices on the Colombo Stock Exchange closed lower on Tuesday, with the key Colombo All Share Price Index decreasing by 21.16 points or 0.60 percent to close at 3,494.62 points.

The highly capitalized Milanka Price Index also decreased by 4. 58 points or 0.11 percent to close at 4,005.89 points.

A total turnover of 1.31 billion rupees (about 11.36 million U. S. dollars) was recorded during the day with a volume of 28.59 million shares being traded.

MUMBAI — The Indian stock benchmark Sensex closed lower Tuesday at 17,422.51 points, down 104.20 points or 0.59 percent from the previous closing Monday.

The total turnover was 258 million U.S. dollars.

Sensex is the common name for the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. It consists of the 30 largest and most actively traded stocks, representative of various sectors, on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

SHANGHAI — China’s benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange closed at 3,273.97 points Tuesday, up 1.91 percent, or 61.22 points, from the previous close.

Total turnover was 177.8 billion yuan (26 billion U.S. dollars).

SHENZHEN — The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 13,381.25 points Tuesday, up 220.16 points, or 1.67 percent, from the previous close.

Total turnover was 116.5 billion yuan (17 billion U.S. dollars).
